Unlike a flange — whose mass follows directly from ASME B16.5 dimensions — a valve body is a casting or forging whose wall thickness is selected by the designer within ASME B16.34 minimums. Two compliant Class 300 gate valves of the same size can legitimately differ by 10% in weight. That is exactly why most online tools don't offer valve weights at all, and why a catalog-calibrated estimate with a disclosed ±10–15% band is the honest answer.

A 2" Class 150 WCB flanged gate valve weighs approximately 21 kg (46 lb); a 6" Class 300 about 144 kg (318 lb); an 8" Class 150 swing check about 130 kg (287 lb). Our tables are calibrated against published manufacturer catalog weight charts, with a typical deviation of ±10–15% from any specific manufacturer's figures.

Why do most online tools not offer valve weights?+

Valve weight is not defined by a simple geometric formula like a flange or elbow: it depends on wall thickness selection (ASME B16.34 permits multiple wall options per class), bonnet design, body style and foundry practice. Most calculators therefore skip valves entirely. Ours uses catalog-calibrated base weights per valve type, class and NPS, with engineering factors for end connection, operation and material — disclosed with an honest ±10–15% accuracy band.

What is the difference between swing, lift and wafer check valve weights?+

A bolted-bonnet swing check (the baseline) is the heaviest common style. A lift check has a more compact body (~15% lighter), while a dual-plate wafer check fits between flanges and weighs only about 45% of a swing check of the same NPS and class — wafer valves are excluded from flange-to-flange face-to-face dimensions entirely.

Are gear-operated valves included?+

Yes. Selecting "gear operated" applies a 1.18 mass factor for NPS 14 and larger valves, reflecting the bevel gearbox, mounting and taller stem extension. The factor is not applied below NPS 14, where gear operators are uncommon on manual multi-turn valves. Actuator masses (pneumatic/electric) are excluded — only the mounting hardware allowance is included.

Which materials are covered?+

ASTM A216 WCB/WCC carbon steel (7,850 kg/m³, baseline), A352 LCB low-temperature carbon steel, A217 WC6/WC9 Cr-Mo alloy steel, and A351 CF8 (304), CF8M (316) and CF3M (316L) stainless castings (~8,000 kg/m³). Weight scales with the material density ratio relative to WCB.

What sizes and classes are covered?+

Gate, globe, check and ball valves in Class 150 and Class 300 from NPS 1/2" to 24", and Class 600 from NPS 1/2" to 12". Face-to-face references follow ASME B16.10 long patterns for gate/globe/check and API 6D patterns for ball valves.

What do ASME B16.34 and B16.10 mean for valve weight?+

ASME B16.34 defines the pressure-temperature ratings and minimum wall thickness requirements from which a valve body is designed — heavier walls for higher classes come directly from its tables. ASME B16.10 defines face-to-face and end-to-end dimensions (short, regular and long patterns). Together they bound, but do not uniquely determine, a valve's mass — which is why catalog calibration is needed for usable weight estimates.
